          Population one, none superior!

1954 Stahl-Meyer Franks Mickey Mantle PSA NM-MT 8. During the 1950's glory days of New York City baseball, when all roads to the World Championship went through the Big Apple, the hot dogs consumed at Yankee Stadium, Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds were the Stahl-Meyer brand. The Brooklyn ballpark even featured a large advertising sign on their outfield wall reading, "Stahl-Meyer Frankfurters Served Here." With the brand already so directly associated with New York City baseball, it only made sense to innovate a new series of baseball cards to serve as promotional items in packages of their products.

The rare, regional promotion lasted just three seasons--1953 through 1955--rather remarkably the only three-season period in history that saw each borough's team win the World Series. Three cards were issued for each team in 1953, and four for each team in the other two years, with Mickey Mantle far and away the most desirable and valuable from each of these sets. While the fact that these cards were only issued in the New York City metroplex largely accounts for their scarcity today, their survival (particularly in high-grade) was likewise hampered by the meaty juices in which they marinated until purchase. You'll note that Stahl-Meyer cards have a thick wax coating to address this issue, and rounded corners to keep them from poking through the plastic of the packaging.

Only twenty-one examples of this card appear at any grade level in the PSA population, and this glorious NM-MT 8 example stands alone at the top. It's highly unlikely that any challenger for that throne will ever appear.
